About Helenite

Helenite is a gemstone created from the volcanic rock of Mount. St. Helens, Washington. The volcano erupted May 18, 1980, miles underground. The stone was discovered when workers used acetylene torches to recover buried equipment. Helenite is made by fusing this material at 2700 degrees F, which then faceted and polished. Helenite's Forest Green color comes from naturally-occuring iron. The Swiss Blue gets its color from cobalt and the Ruby Red from gold. The Mohs hardness 6/10.
